Get Subaru Impreza GG2 Rear KYB Shock Absorber Set in Kenya

The Rear Shock Absorber Assembly (Right Hand and Left Hand) is a vital part of a vehicles suspension system, carefully designed to ensure driving comfort, road safety, and overall handling stability. Located at the rear axle, it works tirelessly to absorb shocks and vibrations generated by uneven road surfaces, potholes, or sudden braking. By controlling the movement of the rear suspension springs, it prevents excessive bouncing, enhances steering precision, and ensures the tires remain firmly planted on the road surface.

Without a properly functioning shock absorber, every bump or dip would cause the vehicle to bounce uncontrollably, reducing stability and making driving uncomfortable. For this reason, the rear shock absorber assembly is considered one of the most important wear-and-tear components in a car.

Function of the Rear Shock Absorber

The rear shock absorber is essentially a hydraulic damping device. Inside the assembly is a piston that moves within a fluid-filled cylinder. As the suspension spring compresses and rebounds, the piston forces hydraulic fluid through small valves. This resistance slows the springs motion, converting kinetic energy into heat that safely dissipates.

Many modern units also incorporate gas charging (nitrogen) to minimize aeration of the hydraulic fluid, ensuring consistent performance under continuous use. By combining spring control with damping force, the rear shock absorber maintains stability even in demanding driving conditions.

The abbreviations RH (Right Hand) and LH (Left Hand) denote the side of the rear axle on which each assembly is fitted. Installing them correctly ensures proper suspension geometry, balance, and safety.

Key Features

1. Hydraulic Damping System Smooths out road irregularities by controlling spring movement.

2. Durable Construction Made from high-strength steel with corrosion-resistant coatings to withstand harsh road conditions.

3. Gas-Charged Technology Prevents foaming of the hydraulic fluid and maintains consistent damping.

4. Precision Fitment Each assembly is designed for exact RH or LH installation, ensuring correct suspension alignment.

5. Integrated Mounts and Bushings Reduce vibration transfer and make installation more straightforward.

Benefits

• Ride Comfort Minimizes vibrations and jolts, giving passengers a smoother journey.

• Vehicle Stability Controls body roll in corners, squat during acceleration, and nose-dive during braking.

• Safety Ensures constant tire contact with the road, reducing braking distances and enhancing grip.

• Tire Longevity Prevents uneven tire wear caused by poor road contact.

• Suspension Protection Reduces strain on springs, control arms, and other suspension components.

Signs of Worn Rear Shock Absorbers

Like all mechanical parts, shock absorbers wear out over time. Warning signs include:

• Excessive bouncing after hitting a bump

• Fluid leaking from the shock body

• Uneven tire wear, especially cupping on the tread

• Clunking or knocking noises from the rear suspension

• Rear of the vehicle squatting excessively under acceleration

• Nose-diving during braking

• Reduced stability or floating feeling at higher speeds

If these symptoms appear, it is recommended to replace both the RH and LH rear shock absorbers simultaneously to maintain balanced performance.

Installation

Replacing rear shock absorbers should always be carried out in pairs. Installing one new unit while leaving the other worn can cause uneven damping, leading to poor handling and additional suspension stress.

The typical installation process involves:

1. Lifting and safely supporting the vehicle.

2. Removing the rear wheels for access.

3. Unbolting the old shock absorber assembly.

4. Installing the new assembly with correct torque settings.

5. Reassembling and road-testing the vehicle.

Professional installation is highly recommended to ensure safety and correct torque application. After replacement, a wheel alignment check is advised to restore optimal handling and prevent premature tire wear.

Maintenance

Rear shock absorbers are generally maintenance-free, but regular inspection is necessary to ensure continued performance. Technicians should check for:

• Leaks around the cylinder

• Cracked or worn bushings

• Corrosion or physical damage

• Unusual noises during suspension movement

Typical service life varies depending on road conditions and driving style, but most shock absorbers last between 60,000 100,000 km. Vehicles driven on rough terrain or carrying heavy loads may require more frequent replacement.

Why Timely Replacement Matters

Operating a vehicle with worn shock absorbers poses several risks:

• Reduced Braking Performance: Worn shocks increase stopping distances.

• Loss of Control: Poor suspension damping can lead to skidding or swerving during emergency maneuvers.

• Increased Tire Wear: Uneven road contact accelerates tread wear and shortens tire life.

• Passenger Discomfort: Vibrations and bouncing compromise ride quality.

• Damage to Other Parts: Excessive suspension stress can wear out bushings, springs, and joints prematurely.

Timely replacement of the rear shock absorber assemblies not only restores the cars original performance but also saves on costly repairs in the long run.
