Get Mazda CX-5 Rear Left & Right Boot Tailgate Struts KB8C636EXin Kenya

The Rear Left & Right Boot Tailgate Struts are gas-charged lift supports engineered to assist in the controlled opening, stable holding, and smooth closing of a vehicles rear boot or tailgate. Often underestimated, these components play a crucial role in vehicle usability and safety, providing mechanical assistance that allows users to open and close the boot effortlesslyeven with one hand.

These struts are designed to support the full weight of the tailgate, reducing the physical effort required while preventing sudden slams or unexpected drops. Whether used on hatchbacks, SUVs, estate vehicles, or vans, quality tailgate struts ensure convenience, comfort, and safe access to the vehicles cargo space.

Purpose and Function

The primary function of boot tailgate struts is to counterbalance the tailgates weight and provide smooth, dampened motion. They absorb energy during opening and release it during closing, ensuring controlled movement.

Key roles include:

• Supporting Tailgate Weight: Holds the tailgate in a fully open position without manual effort.

• Dampened Opening/Closing: Provides a smooth transition, preventing slamming or free-fall.

• Safety and Stability: Reduces risk of injury or damage from unexpected tailgate drops.

• User Convenience: Enables effortless one-hand or hands-free access to the boot.

With struts on both the left and right sides, the system operates in balanced harmony, evenly distributing pressure and stabilizing the tailgate in motion.

Design and Construction

Rear boot tailgate struts are gas-spring mechanisms made from robust materials and designed for repetitive daily use. Their internal and external components are crafted for strength, corrosion resistance, and temperature durability.

Core Components:

1. Cylinder (Outer Tube)
Houses the pressurized nitrogen gas and hydraulic oil. Constructed from high-strength steel with anti-corrosion coatings (e.g., black powder-coated or zinc-plated).

2. Piston Rod
Hardened and polished for smooth sliding. Connects the internal piston to the mounting point on the vehicle.

3. Piston & Valve Assembly
Controls gas flow for regulated compression and extension. Determines the struts speed, damping, and load capacity.

4. Sealing System
Ensures gas and oil containment, and prevents dust or moisture ingress. Typically includes multiple wiper seals and pressure seals.

5. Mounting Ends (Ball Sockets or Eyelets)
Allow articulation and simple attachment to the vehicle body and tailgate.

6. Gas Charge (Nitrogen)
Provides the force required to lift and support the boot. Pressure varies based on tailgate size and weight.

The pairing of two matched strutsleft and rightensures symmetric operation, minimizing stress on tailgate hinges and mounting points.

Benefits and Features

1. Effortless Boot Operation

Tailgate struts reduce the effort required to lift or lower the boot, enhancing comfort and reducing strain.

2. Improved Safety

Properly functioning struts eliminate the risk of the boot slamming down due to gravity or wind. They protect users from injury and safeguard cargo.

3. Enhanced Durability

Built to handle frequent use, exposure to the elements, and varying loads without degrading performance.

4. Noise-Free Operation

High-quality seals and dampers ensure quiet, smooth extension and retraction.

5. Balanced Movement

Paired left and right struts provide even support, reducing wear on hinges and tailgate structures.

6. Rust-Resistant Finish

Weather-resistant coating guards against corrosion, making them suitable for humid or salty environments.

7. Direct-Fit Replacement

Designed to match OEM dimensions and mounting points for hassle-free installation.

Common Signs of Worn or Failing Struts

Like any mechanical component, boot struts wear over timeespecially under heavy use or harsh weather. Failure to replace worn struts can result in functional and safety issues.

Symptoms include:

• Boot no longer stays open

• Tailgate requires excessive force to lift

• Sudden slamming or unexpected closing

• Squeaking, creaking, or clicking noises

• Uneven lifting or tilting to one side

• Visible leakage of gas or hydraulic oil

• Corrosion or damage on the cylinder or rod

Replacing both struts simultaneously is recommended for proper balance and performance.

Installation Guidelines

Replacing boot tailgate struts is generally straightforward and requires minimal tools. However, safety precautions must be observed to avoid injury from a heavy, unsupported tailgate.

Basic Steps:

1. Support the Tailgate
Use a prop rod, broomstick, or assistant to hold the boot open securely.

2. Remove Old Struts
Use a flathead screwdriver or pliers to remove the retaining clips or bolts from both ends of each strut.

3. Align New Struts
Confirm orientationleft and right struts may have different brackets or cylinder rotation.

4. Attach New Struts
Snap ball-joint ends into place or tighten bolts as per the mounting style. Listen for a click or secure fit.

5. Test Boot Operation
Slowly open and close the tailgate to confirm smooth motion and full travel.

Tip: Avoid over-compressing new struts by forcing the boot shut. Let the gas pressure manage the motion.

Maintenance Tips

• Keep the strut shaft cleanwipe off dust and debris regularly

• Avoid applying oil or grease to the shaftit can degrade seals

• Inspect for corrosion or damage during routine vehicle checks

• Replace in pairs for balanced performance and even wear

• Avoid slamming or forcing the boot closedit can damage seals and valves

Though largely maintenance-free, good handling and regular checks can significantly prolong the service life of boot struts.
